blogging thoughts + feelings through my 20's as an empowered young woman

How yoga changed how I view my body

I always thought yoga was for pretentious, fake ‘wanna-be’ influences posing that an hour class was life-changing or ‘vital’ to set them for the week ahead.

The gym was too hardcore for me, making it a chore where I left the session feeling worse about my body, not being able to hit certain numbers or I couldn’t get out my head how my shorts weren’t fitting right. Or that one girl walks in and I curse my ancestors for giving me the genes I now walk the earth wearing.

I was unsatisfied, and my body felt stiffer than ever. I was overloading my nervous system.

Those influencer, yummy mummy’s left me curious and I got myself into a hot yoga class. Apprehensive but kind of excited to be apart of that self-care group, genuine or not, I was in the same room as them.

I left feeling released emotionally, calmer with a less heavy heart. You know they say depression hates a moving target, anxiety hates a quiet mind. I felt balanced for the first time, connecting with my body rather than diminishing it.

3 years later at 21, I continue this practice and look forward to my sessions, connecting with myself, taking care of my joints and stretching into movements that make me proud of my bodies abilities rather than shortcomings.

If you’re looking to start somewhere, book a session go in open minded and remember to breathe (especially during seated chair position).

Now to regulate myself, I take my mat, sit in the garden, let the sun hit my face and grass on my feet and feel like the world isn’t ending for a few moments.

love you lots,
